The PhotographerThe beauty of nature has always had a profound effect on me. Whether I was fly fishing in a pristine stream in Yellowstone National Park as the sun was setting, sitting in a tree stand in upstate NY while the sun rose, or just driving across the great plains in awe of the beauty that was before me, I often struggled to share those images with others. Words failed me. Prior to taking up photography those images, while breathtaking, were fleeting. Photography began as a hobby for me while I was still teaching in the Greece Central School District outside of Rochester, NY. I took an introductory course in 35 mm camera techniques at the Community Darkroom (a wonderful resource for any aspiring photographer) and was hooked. I then started a small business with a good friend selling note cards showing landscapes. On one of our marketing trips to the Adirondacks, a retailer said that she didn’t want the cards but would buy matted prints of our photographs. I soon learned that my photography skills needed more than a little bit of perfecting to make the leap from 4x6 prints to larger prints that would be matted and framed. After retiring from a wonderfully rewarding career in education four years ago, I have been able to devote much more time to my photography and travel. While most of my work is from upstate New York and the Rochester area, I also have many images from other parts of the country. I hope that you will see in my photographs some of the beauty of the world that I would struggle to share in words. Ed Welch |
